The subject of the research: language units at different levels in English and French from pragmatic, discourse communicative, cognitive constructionist, functional, generative, and applied linguistic perspectives. The purpose of the study: to analyze the development and functioning of English and French language systems in diachrony and synchrony, incorporating research principles and methodologies from contemporary linguistic frameworks. The research was conducted utilizing the methods of modern linguistic frameworks: linguistic pragmatics, discourse communicative, cognitive constructionist, functional, generative, and applied linguistics. Results and their novelty: the research conducted from the perspectives of modern linguistic frameworks yielded a number of novel findings. Specifically, 1) a theoretical review of the basic underpinnings of the usage-based theories of language and their incorporation by construction grammar has been carried out; 2) the constructionist framework’s fundamental theoretical and methodological principles have been generalized; 3) the process of degrammaticalization has been developed as a systemic phenomenon in modern English, encompassing both morphological and syntactic language levels; 4) the semantic structure and syntax of the group of preterite-present verbs in the Old Germanic languages have been investigated; 5) the formation of focusing adverbs in English written monuments of the XII-XVII centuries has been outlined; 6) a cognitive dimension of the British perception of Western Europe has been defined; 7) linguistic and cognitive means of depicting a character’s psychological and emotional state of loneliness in French postmodern prose have been systematized.
