Purpose: to study the structural changes in the optic nerve which were caused by a mixture of 40% ethanol and 100% methanol in at a ratio of three to one and with a methanol dose of 0.75 g/ kg body mass. Methods: light optical and optical microscope Results: Both the alcohol mixture and 100% methanol in a dose of 0.75 g/ kg body mass were shown to induce a reaction in the rat’s optic nerve (ON), in the nerve fibers (NF) particularly and, to a greater extent, in their myelin sheaths, within the first hours of the experiment, which is likely to influence the quality of the nerve impulse. Significant manifestation of hydropic dystrophy in NFs of axons and glial cells occurred a shorter period of time after the alcohol mixture (1-3 days) as compared with pure methanol (1-7 days). However, in the two experimental groups, deformation and stratification of myelin sheaths and hydropic changes in axons in large-caliber NFs and pathological changes in a number of glial cells were manifested up to 3 months of the study. After 100% methanol, the changes in the ON structure were deeper and longer as compared with mixed alcohol injections. At all follow-up time points, pathological changes in mitochondria were revealed in the two study groups. Methanol was proved to play the leading role in the development of pathological changes in the ON while ethanol was shown to have a protective value for the structures studied after mixed alcohol injections. During 3 months after both mixed alcohol injections and 100% methanol, there were pathological changes as well as compensatory and recovery processes in the ON. However, reparative processes of the damaged ON structures in the two study groups were rather slow. Product Description popup.authors Boyko Nadiia O. Volkova Ludmyla F. Gavronska Natalia M.
