This approach emphasizes the influence of the cultural era on the formation and development of the literary genre. The issue of ways of practical analysis of a work of art is separately addressed. The purpose of the study is to determine the semantic and structural features of the literary genre in the context of different literary trends and styles. The object of research is the literary genre in the historical and cultural context of the time. Features of the functioning of the genre, ways of its creative modification, analysis of individual indicative genre formations are the subject of research. The results of research work are to determine the specifics of literary trends, ways of forming a genre system, individual genus-species structures. The method of comparative analysis of the genre, its artistic ideology is substantiated. The development of the novel genre during the XIX-XX centuries is analyzed separately. It is pointed out that one of the main features of this development is the principle of epic cyclization. The performers developed a practical method of comparative analysis of art genres, their structural features. Based on this methodology, three textbooks on theoretical and historical courses (Theory of Literature, Historical Poetics, History of Foreign Literature) were prepared and published.
