The issue of nuclear energy safety, including the safety of transportation and long-term storage of spent nuclear fuel, is the subject of discussions in the world scientific community. The safety of spent fuel management operations is largely determined by the condition of fuel rods. With the commissioning of the "dry" storage facility at ZNPP, there is a need to conduct a comprehensive study in Ukraine of the phenomena responsible for the degradation of fuel rods in the management of spent nuclear fuel and its long-term storage. It should be noted that when unloading the irradiated fuel assembly (SNF) from the core and placing it in the holding pool and further, during loading and storage in the "dry" storage, it continues to be affected by a number of factors. The key problems in the management of spent fuel and its long-term storage include the effect of hydrogen, which has accumulated in the zirconium elements of the design of fuel assemblies during operation, on the condition of fuel assemblies and fuel assemblies in general.
