Each molecule of a homogeneous catalyst is a catalytic center, whereas in heterogeneous catalysis only centers on the surface are active. Therefore, the homogeneous catalyst has a much higher activity per unit mass of catalyst. This allows the use of much lower concentrations of catalyst. Homogeneous catalytic reactions occur most often under kinetic control, because the rate of diffusion of reagents to the catalytic center is much higher than the rate of the actual chemical reaction. Since homogeneous catalysts are easily identifiable chemical compounds, the mechanisms of homogeneous catalytic reactions are generally well studied. For heterogeneous catalytic processes, ideas about the mechanism of reactions are quite vague and contradictory. The main disadvantage of homogeneous catalysis is the complexity of separating the catalyst from the products and its recirculation. On the contrary, for heterogeneous catalysis, separation is either not required at all (stationary catalyst bed) or carried out by such simple methods as filtration or centrifugation. Much more complex processes, such as extraction, rectification or ion exchange, are required to isolate homogeneous catalysts. It would be most expedient to create catalysts having positive properties of homogeneous (activity) and heterogeneous (separation) catalysts.
