They can also be used to transmute long-lived isotopes found in spent nuclear fuel. The problem of transmutation is urgent for nuclear energy. Solving this problem will make it possible to further use spent nuclear fuel for energy production and will significantly shorten the storage period of nuclear waste energy industry. At the Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology, the concept of a subcritical hybrid reactor with a thermonuclear neutron source based on a stellarator with an open-trap part (a nuclear-thermonuclear stellarator-probcotron (YTSP) hybrid) has been proposed and is being theoretically developed. The attractive features of this concept are the stationarity of the neutron source and the possibility of locating plasma control systems outside the reactor zone, high energy efficiency, relatively low expected price, reproduction of the tritium necessary for a thermonuclear reaction in the hybrid itself, the possibility of implementing the concept as a small scale (experiment), as well as on a large (industrial) scale.  Product Description popup.authors BARON Demian I.
