Data and knowledge bases on the Ukrainian state entities’ responsibilities in nature resources management, the protection of the environment and environmental safety were created. Case studies from Ukrainian and European cities and municipalities were selected and presented. The current state of the EU Directives implementation into national environmental legislation was assessed. The comparative analysis of the EU and Ukrainian legislation and norms regarding the quality of the atmospheric, aquatic, soil components of the urban environment, as well as the best management practices (BMPs) in the fields of waste collection, utilization and recycling, the anthropogenic noise pollution assessment was provided. The research results may be used in the environmental management and governance practice of cities, municipalities and communities of Ukraine, and in higher education curricula in the Environmental Sciences, Engineering & Management.
