It is shown that the field emission current from a two-layer metal system with a coating thickness of nanometer dimensions has an oscillatory resonant character. The dependence of the tip heating process on the dimensional effects is shown, in particular, the melting of the emitter tip, taking into account the size of the tip, begins for current densities an order of magnitude smaller than for the case without taking into account the dimensional effects. It is shown that the process of sublimation of neutral atoms from the cathode surface until the melting of the emitter tip weakly affects the temperature distribution, since the relative temperature difference without and with sublimation is 0.1 μK. It is numerically shown that taking into account the Nottingham effect leads to a decrease in the intensity of the breakdown electric field, so for a field gain of the order of 50 the decrease is about 10%.
