The historical-genetic method, the method of comparative and historical analysis, the method of systematization and content analysis of references were used to analyze the historical development of the research problem. The results of the research and their novelty are revealed in the fact that the formation of a large information array from the chosen problem into a rigorous scientific approach provides an opportunity to expand the existing view on the processes of interaction between society and its environment, and also allows to transfer the design and forecasting of ways of development of the urban environment to a qualitatively new level, corresponding to the modern paradigm of sustainable development. Identified and shown on numerous examples of the transformation of European cities in the understanding of approaches to the organization of the modern urban environment can be used in the formation of strategies for the sustainable development of Ukrainian cities, which is especially relevant in the context of European integration, the policy of decentralization of regional management and the promotion of European standards for the quality of the urban environment. The obtained results can become a theoretical and methodological design basis for the development of textbooks, educational programs and lecture courses in the processes of training specialists in the field of architecture and in the system of higher professional education.
