Registration Date 05-01-2023 Organization V.P. Kukhar Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry and Petrochemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine popup.description2  Hydrophobic onium salts (cationic biocides), comprising 1,3-dialkylimidazolium, 1-dodecylpyridinium, N-dodecylguanidinium cations and dodecylbenzenesulfonate, dioctylsulfosuccinate anions, have been synthesized. Composite polymer films based on poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), containing 10-20% of cationic biocides, were prepared by solvent casting. Onium salts were found to have a plasticizing effect on these polymers, which manifests itself in a decrease in the glass transition temperature (Tg) by 30-40 °С, as well as an increase in elongation at break by 3-5 times. Tertiary amides of fatty acids (oleic, undecenoic, ricinoleic) have been synthesized. The results of mechanical and thermophysical studies indicate a high plasticizing activity of compounds relative to PVC and PMMA, which is manifested in a decrease in the Tg value by 60-90 °C and an increase in the elasticity of polymer films by 5-12 times at an additive content of 20-30%. It has been found that fatty amides exhibit high antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive (S. aureus and A. baumannii) and Gram-negative (E. coli) bacteria at a concentration of 5%. Thus, modifiers of this type can perform the dual function of plasticizers and biocides for polymer coatings. Model protective polymer coatings, modified with cationic biocides, have been prepared. The spectrophotometric study results indicate that that cationic biocides have a high resistance to release into water (release ratio less than 1% in 30 days). Polymer coatings modified with cationic biocides C8C8IM-DOSS and DG-DOSS in the amount of 20% were found to suppress the formation of bacterial biofilms (E. coli and S. aureus) on the surface. The results of field tests in fresh water (Dnipro River) indicate high resistance of coatings to biofouling. In particular, the amount of attached biomass on the surface of the modified coatings after 140 days was two orders of magnitude lower compared to the control coatings.
