A comparative analysis of the transformation of the porosity of rocks and coal of the Donetsk and Lviv-Volyn basins showed that the main factor affecting the porosity of sandstones is pressure, while coal responds to temperature to a greater extent. Special attention was paid to the study of the closed porosity of sandstones. According to the developed method, the volumes of closed porosity in detrital rock grains were determined. It was established that the volumes of closed porosity change according to a polynomial dependence with a maximum at the middle substage of catagenesis. The indicators of the volume of closed porosity in the middle substage of catagenesis reach 4%, which is twice the value for the early and late substages. Structural features and mineral composition of sandstones were determined with the help of microscopic studies of thin sections. Catagenetic changes in the structure, mineralogical composition, and physical and mechanical properties of rocks occur parallel to each other and are directly related to each other. Established patterns of changes in the structure and mineralogical composition of sandstones can serve as markers of rock transformation and be used to predict their physical and mechanical properties. This, in turn, will make it possible to predict the distribution areas of outburst rocks and assess their collector potential.
