Socio-cultural distinctions and civilizational models for imitation, which circulated in Ukrainian historical and socio-political thought, were considered. The idea of the socio-cultural frontier of Ukraine is presented in the coordinates of temporal relativism, civilizational dynamism and wave conceptualization. It is noted that civilizational images and sociocultural ideas are organically connected with traditions and innovations of Ukrainian socio-political and historical thought. From the height of our modernity, they allow us to trace the original layer of ideas that made up the cornerstones of the Ukrainian project: from socio-cultural distinctions to the search for civilizational models for state building, from the delineation of a "foreign" / hostile socio-cultural community to the affirmation of "our own", from attempts to ascertain socio-cultural similarities to strategies of fitting into the Western civilization living space as a cultural symbol and worldview orientation. The opinion is argued that the modern Russian-Ukrainian war fully fits into the dimensions of both a civilizational conflict and a dramatic contest of identities. With the application of the conceptual principles of the theory of socio-cultural alienation and the strategies of "cross-history", the historical origins of the civilizational, political and socio-humanitarian crisis in Ukrainian-Russian relations, manifestations of systemic deformations and transformations of spatial dynamics on the Ukrainian-Russian border are represented.
