The subject of research is the Near, Far and Varangian caves of the Kyiv-Pechersk lavra. The purpose of the work is a comprehensive study of the history of the development of the cave complexes of the Kyiv-Pechersk monastery from the middle of the 11th c. up to the present day. Research methods: general scientific – the method of primary sources, bibliographic, descriptive, iconological interpretation method, comparative, paleographic and natural research method. The application of these methods made possible to systematize the factual material with its further processing in chronological and subject order. In turn, this made it possible to consistently approach the solution of the tasks in the research. The state of scientific development of the topic was determined, the historiography was analyzed, and the source base was researched. The main stages in the development of the cave complexes of the Kyiv-Pechersk lavra are highlighted. The development of the cave complexes of the Kyiv-Pechersk monastery is studied at different historical stages. The practical significance of the obtained results lies - in the possibility of their use in course of the work with tour guides of the National Reserve "Kyiv-Pechersk lavra". This is especially important at the time when tourist routes and excursion topics develop, - for preparing lectures on the history of museum affairs, - for monument preservation work, - for preparing scientific and methodological recommendations for improving work of nature reserves and relevant profile museums also.
