The purpose of the research is to determine the informativeness (to conduct an analysis and practical comparison) of methodical approaches to determine the soil moisture content by both generally accepted contact and non-contact methods. Research methods - informational-monographic, abstract-logical; field, laboratory-analytical; calculation-constructive; cartographic; mathematical modeling, statistical. Theoretical and practical results – the analysis of methodical approaches to determining the soil moisture content, both the standard gravimetric method and those mediated through the electrical resistance of the soil to direct current, electrical impedance, optical and thermal properties in the infrared range, elastic neutron scattering, gamma radiation absorption, etc. As a result of field studies, some features of lateral (landscape) and radial (profile) distribution of soil moisture content in zonal soils of Ukraine were established. Novelty - updated data on methods of determining soil moisture content. Effectiveness of implementation - increasing the informativeness of meteorological observations on the moisture balance in stationary field experiments, experimental sites, etc. The results are recommended for use in scientific research institutions of the NAAS in the organization of observations of the moisture balance in stationary field experiments, test sites, etc., in the educational process in institutions of higher education of agrarian and natural sciences.
