In this work, a stepped waveguide formed by the rigid contact of two half-layers of different thicknesses and with the same or different mechanical characteristics was considered as a non-homogeneous waveguide, both during symmetric and antisymmetric oscillations. When solving the boundary value problem, the superposition method was used, which takes into account the presence of a local feature at the corner point. On the basis of the obtained solutions, the physical features of the formation of wave fields in such waveguides were investigated. In particular, the structure of the field and the role of its individual components were studied; the influence of the symmetry of oscillations, changes in the geometric characteristics of the waveguide, changes in the mechanical properties of the contacting media on the resonant phenomena of the wave field. The existence of resonance based on the energy of the reflected field in the stepped waveguide has been established. It is shown that in a stepped waveguide there are two frequency ranges in which the energy of the reflected field increases significantly. The reasons for the occurrence of these resonances are different for symmetric and antisymmetric oscillations. It was established that with symmetric oscillations, the resonant nature of the reflected (transmitted) fields occurs at lower frequencies and has a higher Q factor than with antisymmetric oscillations. In the case of symmetric oscillations, the first resonance is due to the excitation of inhomogeneous waves, in the case of antisymmetric oscillations, the appearance of the second propagating mode.
