The field of energy efficiency research caused by the shortage of energy resources and the direction in order to improve the fleet environmental protection which is the basis of the requirements set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to the MARPOL Convention regarding the constructive index (coefficient) of energy efficiency (EEDI), as well as the presence and implementation of the Ship's Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) during operations. Based on the main results of the research it is possible to identify the main conceptual directions for improving the efficiency of the safe of ship’s systems and equipment operation which allows to achieve the best or optimal values of indicators of economy, environmental protection and energy efficiency, and ways of its improvement. The main attention in the studies was paid to the following issues: neutralization of harmful emissions in gases and improvement of the efficiency of internal combustion engines on water transport by means of homogenization and catalytic treatment of diesel fuel; improvement of the environmental protection operations in terms of ballast water treatment according to the D2 standard; increasing the accident-free operation of submersible sea vessels with the introduction of a system for removing parasitic air volumes inside ballast tanks.
