In peripheral blood lymphocytes of primary СС patients, compared to conditionally healthy controls, were found a 1.8-fold decrease in the transmembrane potential of mitochondria and a 1.8-fold increase of superoxide anion-radical generation, a 2.1-fold increase of DNA double-strand breaks (DSB), a 3.9-fold increase in frequency of chromosome aberrations and a 3.5-fold increase in the level of apoptosis. A 1.6-fold decrease of protein sulfhydryl groups (SH groups) and a 1.4-fold increase of pro-antioxidant ratio were observed in the blood of patients. These changes indicate a violation of redox balance, a depletion of blood detoxification capabilities, and development of genome instability before treatment of CC patients. Combined radiation and chemotherapy of CC patients was accompanied by an increase in oxidative stress in the blood, as evidenced by a 2.0-fold increase in superoxide anion radical production, a 1.6-fold increase of pro-antioxidant ratio, a 1.2-fold increase in DSB DNA and reduced content of SH groups.
