The purpose of the research was to identify the mechanisms of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in plankton and benthos and to assess the impact on biological communities in the conditions of the northwestern part of the Black Sea. In the course of the work, a database was prepared that combines pelagic (phyto- and zooplankton) and benthic (flagellates, meio-, macrozoobenthos) communities, as well as abiotic factors. The database includes data mainly in the area of the Odesa Maritime Region in various periods from 2005 to 2022. The relationship between climatic anomalies and outbreaks of micro- and macroalgal blooms in the marine waters of Ukraine is analyzed in the report, and spatial features are presented on the basis of historical and modern data of the occurrence of HABs. The water areas, which are located in the zone of maximum influence of the river runoff, and are most liable to the phenomena of HABs, have been identified. According to statistical indicators of deviation anomalies, potentially dangerous regions were identified. Based on long-term observations, the mechanisms of mass development of short-cycle (phytoplankton)and long-cycle(phytobenthos)components of aquatic vegetation are described. The interrelation between phyto- and zoocomponents of plankton are analyzed, and certain regularities of the development of copepods are revealed depending on the size of microalgae cells. Optimal characteristics of copepod development in relation to the volume of microalgae cells are given. In the course of work, biotesting methods revealed toxic concentrations of a cyanobacteria complex. Responses of benthic communities based on the state of heterotrophic flagellates, meio-,macrozoobenthos,and ichthyofauna to algae blooms in certain areas of the northwestern part of the Black Sea are presented Product Description popup.authors Bogatova Yuliia I.
