Registration Date 21-02-2023 Organization M.G.Kholodny Institute of Botany NASU popup.description2 The project is based on materials from the collection of original specimens of the genus Artemisia deposited in the historical herbarium of W. Besser (KW-BESS) at the National Herbarium of Ukraine (KW). The goal of the work is taxonomic and nomenclatural inventory and analysis of specimens of Artemisia species from the KW-BESS collection and their partial digitization. This research was guided by the principles and provisions of the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (Shenzhen Code, 2018) and the method of digitizing herbarium collections using international digitization standards (BRAHMS, HerbScan inverted scanner). The content of the collection of specimens of the genus Artemisia KW-BESS has been assessed (totally 1162 herbarium sheets) and a catalog of specimens has been compiled (species-rank 210 taxa). Our analysis of protologues and herbarium labels demonstrated that for 86 taxa (species and/or infraspecific taxa) there are available types and/or other original material; for 36 taxon names, their information needs additional evaluation, and 14 names are of uncertain nomenclatural status (their names have never been validly published). For 245 names of taxa described by Besser described or with his participation, and for nomenclatural combinations based of these taxon names, their status according to modern scientific data has been determined. It has been revealed that the names of 27 taxa described by Besser are currently taxonomically accepted. As the digitization test mode, 36 herbarium specimens have scanned, and primary information associated with them has been recorded. The obtained research results laid the foundation for further progress in various studies of the genus Artemisia. Digitization of specimens according to the specified methodology will contribute to the preservation of samples of the globally important collection, the threats to which are increasing under the wartime conditions.
