The aim of the work is to construct the mechanical models that adequately describe the linear and nonlinear effects during the deformation of auxetic materials. Research methods are analytical and numerical ones. This work resulted in a theoretical explanation of auxetic properties of elastic materials using the non-linear models of elastic deformations for the wide range of the values of deformations up to moderate level is proposed. The Analytical expressions corresponding to three types of universal deformations (simple shear, uniaxial tension, omnidirectional tension) were obtained within the framework of three models of elasticity known in the nonlinear theory - two-constant neo-Hookean model, three-constant Mooney-Rivlin model, five-constant Murnagan's model. The most unexpected result is that a sample made of an elastic auxetic material deforms like the conventional material for the small strain values, then with an increase to the moderate strain values, the material deforms like the auxetic one. This theoretical result complies with the results of the published experiments. The constructed models of auxetic materials, the problem statements, and methods of their solution can be used in the production of aircraft and shipbuilding.
