The role of self-afforestation processes in the formation of ecosystems according to zonal and azonal types, as well as changes in the main physico-chemical and biotic parameters of soils, was established, and the potential of carbon sequestration by the soils of post-agrarian ecosystems of the Beskids was assessed, taking into account elements of the mineral matrix and Al- and Fe-organic compounds. A comprehensive analysis of the naturalness of ecosystems was conducted based on structural, ecological and biogeographical and indicative indicators of the diversity of soil and terrestrial invertebrate groups, as well as birds and bats. Ways to optimize the economic use of former agricultural lands after their afforestation have been developed; in particular, measures for the preservation of heaths as an object-rare grouping of Western Polissia, prevention of the spread of Scots pine on the territory of the nature reserve fund of Northern Podillia.
