The purpose of the work is to adapt the experience of using district heating systems (DH) of the fourth generation (4GDH) to the conditions of Ukraine and to develop scientific and technical foundations for the modernization of domestic DH. In the context of the EU Green Deal, the main features of Ukraine's district heating systems as an important tool for the energy transition are analyzed. Data on the structure and components of these systems are presented. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of promising means and technologies for energy storage from low-carbon generation. The results of comparison of the characteristics of district heating systems and the corresponding advanced systems of the fourth generation are presented.
