The study proved that the nature of its development, the efficiency of its functioning and the level of competitiveness do not correspond to promising transformations in rural areas and global trends in the development of the agrarian sector. It is substantiated that trade in the countryside develops unsystematically, deformed and contradictory. The key reason for this state of affairs is an inefficient trade policy, the lack of modern fundamental scientific research in the field of rural trade, and the uncertainty of strategic priorities for its development in the context of the modern concept of village development. It was determined that the priorities of the development of rural trade should correspond to the key tasks of the socio-economic development of the village and should be aimed at: • formation of a complex sphere of trade services in rural areas; • large-scale development of retail trade, first of all, cooperative, adaptation of retail networks to the requirements of the theory and practice of rural development; • improvement of the agrarian market, accelerated development of small wholesale trade in the field of sale of agricultural products; • formation of new markets in rural areas; • creation of modern infrastructural facilities for the functioning of trade in the countryside; • modernization of trade in the countryside and formation of an accessible and effective trade service system. It is substantiated that large-scale problems, negative phenomena and trends continue to accumulate in rural trade, which objectively determines the need for scientific substantiation of strategic directions and priorities of its development within the limits of new forms.
