A promising way to achieve this is the creation of multilayer (gradient) structures consisting either of a material with a homogeneous chemical composition, the microstructure and properties of which change with depth, or combining materials that are significantly different in nature and mechanical properties (metals, composites, ceramics) in one product to achieve the required set of properties as a whole. It is generally accepted that to ensure sufficient ballistic protection, armor elements must have a high-strength and hard surface layer that will ensure the deformation and braking of striking elements (bullets, projectiles), and deep layers with high viscosity indicators, which will ensure the avoidance of the propagation of cracks and the destruction of the armor element. Titanium materials, which combine high strength and surface hardness with sufficient plastic characteristics of the base metal, are promising for use in various fields of technology, in particular, as armor elements in the defense industry. It is possible to obtain the above combination of properties by creating materials that consist of several layers that differ in their physical and mechanical characteristics. The work examines the peculiarities of the microstructure, mechanical characteristics, and ballistic resistance of such materials. Ballistic tests of the obtained materials with different types of bullets, differing in kinetic energy, core hardness and the presence of an ignition mixture, were carried out, and the peculiarities of the penetration of striking elements depending on the structural state of the material were investigated. It has been proven that materials with a gradient and layered structure have undeniable advantages compared to homogeneous titanium alloys of the same thickness.
