The dialects of the Cherkasy region belong to the Middle Transdnieper dialect, which many linguists have studied over the past centuries. However, despite the deepening interest, this area remains one of the problem areas of the Ukrainian dialect space, which has not become the object of a comprehensive study. The object of research in the new topic was the folk geographic vocabulary of the Middle Transnistrian dialects of the Cherkasy region since geographical names are one of the archaic and stable layers of vocabulary, and they record not only information about the geographical realities of a specific area, but also historical, linguistic, social and mental features people The main goal of the proposed scientific project is to systematically study the variation and areal behaviour of geographical vocabulary in Middle Transnistrian dialects. Research methods: descriptive, comparative-historical, and areological, as well as the proven method of a targeted interview using a questionnaire and the method of mapping. The completed topic results will expand the empirical base of Ukrainian dialect lexicology, lexicography and linguogeography. The presented materials can be used in the formation of the Consolidated Dictionary of Ukrainian Dialects corpus and the Lexical Atlas of the Ukrainian Language, in toponymic research. In addition, the audio recordings will be included in the base of the Ukrainian Dialect Phonofund.
