Main results: 1. The analysis of electromagnetic properties of periodic and aperiodic layered media is carried out. It is proposed for the first time to use the self-generating Kolakoski sequence as a forming principle for aperiodic layered media constructing. 2. The propagation of electromagnetic waves in the layered hyperbolic metamaterials was studied. The conditions for appearance of bi-hyperbolic and tetra-hyperbolic-like forms of isofrequency surfaces are found out for the first time 3. A new design of Bragg fiber with aperiodic layered cladding is proposed. 4. Two prospect designs of microstructured fibers are proposed, which are designed to implement the functions of transforming the shape of ultrashort laser pulses in the temporal and spectral domains. 5. The dispersion characteristics of electromagnetic waves in semiconductor nanowires with a homogeneous graphene coating were studied. Scattering characteristics are investigated for both a single nanowire and nanowire clusters For the first time, the cutoff conditions for higher-order TM modes of surface plasmons are correctly determined. 6. The dispersion characteristics of surface plasmons in a magnetic semiconductor nanowire based on In2-xCrxO3 were studied. The coexistence of surface plasmons of both TM and TE polarizations within the same frequency range was revealed. 7. The conditions for the formation of ultrashort pulses with a special shape in arbitrary optical fibers were studied and recommendations were given.
