The object of the study is the stages of preparation of foreign citizens for foreign language communication in the higher education institutions of Ukraine. The purpose of the work is to develop methods for the formation of communicative and language competences of foreign citizens, taking into account the stages of socio-cultural adaptation. Methodical support for the process of preparing foreign citizens for foreign language communication has been developed, the effectiveness of the formation of Ukrainian language competence of foreign students and their mastery of Ukrainian language knowledge has been analyzed, which involves the use of a communicative approach to teaching foreign citizens the Ukrainian language as a model of the process of real communication. Based on the analysis, generalization of scientific sources and educational practice, a system of principles, approaches, methods, techniques, and forms of teaching the Ukrainian language is proposed. The essence of the Ukrainian-language competence of foreign students is determined as a professionally important integrative quality of the personality, which enables foreign citizens to effectively communicate in the Ukrainian language in the educational, professional and socio-cultural environment of a higher education institution of Ukraine. It has been proven that the adaptation of foreign students and the formation of their Ukrainian-language competence in the cultural and educational space of a higher education institution should be considered as a competence-oriented educational process that takes into account personally oriented, communicative, competence-based approaches and the principles of student-oriented learning, the relationship between learning, education and development.
