The key problems of functioning of railway transport enterprises are identified, the main ones are the reduction of investments and curtailment of large-scale infrastructure projects, ignoring the processes of digitalization of the transport and logistics sector, suspension of network electrification processes and disinterest in the implementation of environmental projects, gradual reduction of the technical operational resource of enterprises, reduction of personnel resources, implementation of inefficient personnel policy, implementation of inefficient investment policy, lack of formation of the marketing communication system with customers, etc. Based on the fact that innovation is a key category in the theory of innovation activity, approaches to the definition of the concept of "innovation" are revealed, characteristics and types of innovations are established, and it is determined that the introduction of innovations is carried out according to a certain sequence, which is reflected in the specifics of innovation processes.
