The identification of alfalfa breeding material was carried out based on a complex of economic and valuable features: the root system and its features. Selected populations of Unitro, Askania-Nova #38, selection and Nadezhda, selection, which were characterized by the highest indicators. A comparative assessment of alfalfa populations for seed germination in salt solutions was carried out. The highest resistance to salt solutions was characterized by the population of A. yellow, add. In the control nursery, in the second year of life, grassy high fodder productivity (from 3.33 to 3.09 kg/m2, dry matter - 0.92 kg/m2) was marked by numbers: 15/22 and 23/22. In the first year of the grass stand, several numbers of alfalfa were distinguished by the yield of green mass (1.09-1.12 kg/m2): 17/23, 10/23, 15/23 with a yield of the standard Unitro variety of 0.99 kg/m2. In the breeding nursery of the second year of life, the best populations of grass are: 164/22 and 203/22, which are characterized by high seed productivity (195-200 kg/ha) exceeding the standard by 2.6-5.2%. In the previous variety test in the second year of life, the maximum productivity of green mass (31.8 t/ha) and dry matter (6.55 t/ha) was formed by population 14/22. In the competitive variety test for fodder use in the second year of life, alfalfa selection numbers: 2/22 (Lamia variety) and 5/22 formed a high yield of green mass and dry matter in the range: 30.7-31.4, 6.5-6, 9 t/ha, while the yield of the standard Unitro variety is 27.3 and 6.0 t/ha, respectively. The maximum seed yield (224-230 kg/ha) was formed by populations: 33/22 (Lamia variety) and 36/22, which exceeded the standard Unitro variety by 3.2-6.0%.
