EVOLUTION, SKELETON, PHYLOGENY, MORPHOLOGY, MAMMALS. Research objects: Taxa: chiropterans, cetaceans, including extant and extinct baleen whales, toothed whales, “archaeocetes”, representatives of closely related taxa and functionally similar groups (outgroups). Structures: skeleton elements – skull, hyoid, vertebrae, ribs, sternum, girdles and limbs, teeth; genes: 5’-end Hox-genes. Project aim: overall aim is identification of ways of integration and transformation, sources of evolutionary novelties in mammalian skeleton systems during their transition to aerial and aquatic ways of life. The project is focused on research of skeleton structures as the most conservative elements, which are convenient models for study of evolutionary processes. It is specially focused on processes of ontogeny prolongation in groups which are known for their body size disparity and longevity. During the project, the collection and processing of morphological and genetic data, their analysis, including the improvement of the appropriate methodological apparatus, phylogenetic analyzes and assessment of the prospects for practical application were conducted. Research methods: traditional and geometric morphometry, multidimensional morphological modelling; data collection – 3D surface scanning, X-radiography, photography, measurements. Microscopy and CT. Preparation of micromorphological preparations (including paleohistology), microscopy and computer tomography. Geometric morphometry of two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects. Mathematical methods: factor analysis, graph analysis, leading eigenvector method, modularity and integration estimation.
