The purpose of the work is to study the peculiarities of structural changes and phase chemical analysis in powder tool steel K390 (manufactured by Buhler) during surface hardening with laser beam heating and the corresponding changes in the operational characteristics of the steel (hardness and tribological characteristics under dry friction). Research methods: optical microscopy, electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray structural analysis, microhardness measurement, tribological testing. The influence of chemical and structural modification using ion-plasma nitriding and laser processing (separately and in combination) on the phase-structural state and physical-mechanical properties of Bohler K390 MICROCLEAN tool steel was studied. Microstructural studies were carried out, durometric and tribological tests of processed steel samples were carried out. The effectiveness of the combination of various volume and surface treatment technologies to obtain a nanodispersed state of the structure and increase in the operational properties of K390 steel (wera resistance – maximum in 2 times) is shown. Technological recommendations for the process of surface modification of a tool made of Bohler K390 MICROCLEAN have been formulated.
