The state of use of organic fertilizers in crop production in Ukraine and the EU is compared. The carbon footprint of crop production in Ukraine during 1990‒2021 was determined. The change in the energy intensity of the soil of Ukraine in terms of organic carbon content during 1990‒2021 and the amount of organic fertilizers required for its restoration on the scale of the country and administrative regions were determined. The balance of phosphorus in the agriculture of Ukraine and EU countries during 1990‒2021 was calculated as an indicator of the intensity of use of soil nutrients. The phytotoxic effect of disinfectants and agents used to disinfect animal by-products has been established. The technological parameters of the processing of various by-products of animal and vegetable origin into organic fertilizer have been determined experimentally - the material and technical base; basic requirements for mixing organic and mineral components of fertilizers; preparation of raw materials; ways to reduce ammonia emissions (deodorization); the technological process of preparation, granulation and storage of fertilizer in accordance with the current requirements of Ukraine and the EU for the quality of fertilizers. The energy efficiency of technologies existing in Ukraine and elements of technologies for processing by-products of animal origin into organic fertilizer developed on the basis of the Institute of Agroecology and Environmental Management of NAAS was determined.
