AQUATIC ECOSYSTEMS, HYDROBIONTS, RADIOACTIVE CONTAMINATION, DOSE OF IRRADIATION, DOSE-DEPENDENT EFFECTS RADIATION PROTECTION, ECOLOGICAL SAFETY. The object of research is the behavior of radionuclides and their effects on biosystems in the water bodies of the Chernobyl exclusion zone. The purpose of the research is to perform a retrospective analysis of radiation exposure and calculation of the current absorbed dose rate of ionizing radiation to aquatic plants, representatives of zoobenthos and fish, as well as to evaluate the effects of chronic exposure of aquatic biota at the cellular, tissue, organismal, and population-species levels. Research methods - hydrobiological and radioecological methods of sampling; spectrometric and radiochemical analysis of radionuclide concentration in the components of aquatic ecosystems; dosimetric analysis of the absorbed dose rate of ionizing radiation; cytogenetic, hematological and production methods for radiation effects assessment. Long-term radiation exposure of aquatic biota in the Chernobyl exclusion zone causes reactions that indicate damage to the studied species of plants and animals at various levels of organization of biological systems. The particular importance are cytogenetic and genetic effects, which are the result of violations of genome stability, with a high probability of implementation in the form of an increase in the frequency of mutations, a decrease in reproductive capacity, and the disappearance of certain species. Cumulative radiobiological processes in aquatic organisms in the Chernobyl exclusion zone can last for many generations, allowing us to assume at present the possibility of incomplete manifestation of remote effects of radiation exposure.
