It is shown that the next stage in improving the physical efficiency, reliability, and service life of fuel rods is the transition to the combined use of neutron-absorbing materials dysprosium hafnate (Dy2O3⋅HfO2) and boron carbide. For PWRs operating on MOX fuel, the use of hafnium diboride (HfB2) is promising. The report presents some aspects of hafnium diboride performance as a promising neutron absorber in comparison with other neutron-absorbing materials; the thermodynamic aspects of the synthesis of hafnium diboride from the starting compounds of hafnium oxide, boron, boron carbide during sintering in vacuum were investigated; the influence of the temperature of sintering in vacuum on the completeness of synthesis and characteristics of hafnium diboride tablets was investigated.
