M. Vysotsky popup.description2 Currently, ash trees are threatened by two aggressive invasive pest species, Hymenoscyphus fraxineus caused ash dieback (ADB) and Agrilus planipennis, emerald ash borer (EAB). The overall purpose is to expand the current knowledge of the role of biotic interactions between pests and ash, which is essential for saving ash trees and associated biodiversity in Latvia and Ukraine. Tasks: i) to study methods for early detection of EAB based on Ukrainian experience; ii) to identify fungal/bacterial community and parasitoids associated with EAB; iii) to analyze multispecies interactions with ash and strategy for EAB management. Methods - phytopathology, biotechnology, bioinformatics and molecular and statistical methods of data analysis. Results: for the first time, the identification of the main risks of the spread of the Agrilus planipennis together with ash dieback in Ukraine and, for the first time in Europe, mapping and analysis of resistant phenotypes and genotypes to ash dieback and emerald ash borer. The results has therefore strong potential to contribute significantly to the development of short- and the long-term strategies for tree management and biological control of invasive pest insect emerald ash borer before its arrival and establishment in the Latvia and EU, as well as avoid rapid expansion through Ukraine from east to west. It is evident that EAB will become a major pest in Europe, early response before introducing this pest and development of control methods will be able to reduce the level of ash mortality, and thus improve the opportunity for the long-term survival of ash as an important component in European forests. Relevance: first practical recommendations for stakeholders to detect, diagnose and prevent the spread of plaque and prevent loss of common alder, identify and map resistant phenotypes and genotypes.
