A technique stabilizing the energy scale of the detectors has been developed based on the analysis of the position of the 113mCd β-spectrum edge and the results of calibration measurements. The main time and spectroscopic characteristics of the detector system have been determined. Comparison of experimental data obtained during calibration measurements with gamma radiation sources and Monte Carlo models has shown a good agreement and has allowed to determine accurately the energy thresholds of the detector system. Radioactive contamination of detectors and setup materials was estimated. The experimental sensitivity to different modes of 106Cd 2β decay to the ground state of daughter nucleus are estimated. An experimental setup was built to measure the double beta decay of 116Cd into excited levels of the daughter nucleus. Measurements are carried out at a depth of 3.6 km of water equivalent at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (Italy). A cadmium tungstate scintillation crystal enriched in the 116Cd isotope to 82% is placed in a GeMulti low-background setup containing 4 HPGe detectors, each one with a volume of over 200 cm3, mounted in a cryostat with a cylindrical well in the middle of the cryostat endcap between the detectors. The detectors are shielded by a massive layers of radiopure copper and lead and flushed with nitrogen to remove radon from the volume of the installation. The data collection system records waveforms from all detectors and their time of appearance. Test measurements with the setup have been carried out, the energy resolution of the cadmium tungstate detector was optimized, and digital algorithms for signal processing from HPGe detectors are currently being optimized to maximize the energy resolution.
