ATOM, AUTOIONIZATION, POTASSIUM, EXCITATION, IONIZATION, EFFECTIVE CROSS SECTION, CORRELATION EFFECTS, THEORETICAL APPROACH. The object of research is the processes of formation and decay of the autoionization states of the potassium atom, which reveal resonant and correlation effects accompanying these processes. The main scientific results. During the work, cross sections of ionization of the valence 4s shell and cross sections of ionization and excitation of subvalent shells 3p6, 3s2 were obtained. The results are obtained in the relativistic approximations of distorted waves, Coulomb-Born and binary-encounter-dipole collisions, which are compared with experimental and theoretical data of other authors. Our calculations showed that the process of direct ionization of the 3p6, 3s2 shells contributes to the total cross section of the single ionization of the K atom to 24% and 1%, respectively. At the same time, it is shown that the excitation of the 3p6 shell is the main process of autoionization of the K atom and contributes 29% to its total single ionization cross section. Excitation of the 3s2 shell contributes 7% to the autoionization cross section and ≈1.5% to the total ionization cross section of the K atom. The obtained results allow not only to interpret the available experimental data, but also to modify theoretical approaches and approximations to future calculations of the fundamental characteristics of complex electron-ion systems.
