The peculiarities of the microstructure and the evolution of the texture with increasing coating thickness and their influence on the mechanical properties and wear resistance of WN-based coatings applied by cathodic-arc evaporation at different negative bias voltages (Us) were comprehensively studied. It was found that all multilayer coatings showed a tendency to change grain orientation from (200) to (111) planes with increasing coating thickness. Studies of the mechanical properties and wear resistance of multilayer coatings based on WN demonstrated improved characteristics compared to single-layer coatings: nanohardness of about 35.2 ± 3.3 GPa, high elastic deformation to failure and resistance to plastic deformation, as well as low wear rate of about 1.9 · 10-6 mm3/ Nm. The new scientific results obtained in the work can be used in industry for the selection and optimization of high-quality protective coatings for metal and ceramic surfaces operated in harsh conditions (erosion, wear, cutting, heat treatment, chemical treatment, etc.). Such coatings eliminate the need for lubricants and increase the quality of manufactured tools, ultimately reducing maintenance costs. The method of obtaining multilayer nitride coatings obtained in the work can be useful from the point of view of practical use in jet engines, hypersonic vehicles, refractory crucibles for active melting of metals, parts of submarines and industry as protective coatings for cutting tools, wear-resistant parts and abrasives that work in extreme conditions. The results can be used in further research and development of promising materials Product Description popup.authors Borba-Pogrebnjak Svitlana O.
