Registration Date 09-01-2024 Organization V. Bakul Institute of superhard material of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine popup.description2  The concept to create double-layer cutting composites from PCBN of the BL group sufficient for processing hardened steels under dynamic loading and cutting speeds up to 200 m/minute was developed. The composites are based on a layer by layer reinforcement with oxide microfibers Al2O3w, added to change the chemical interaction with the treated material, and oxide-free SiCw microfibers added to ensure increasing physical and mechanical properties of the composites. Under high pressure and temperature the samples of double-layer cutting plates made of PCBN were synthesized and their physical and mechanical properties were studied. It was established, that at speeds of cutting up to 100 m/h the highest resistance is inherent in the plane of the cutting plate, reinforced with SiCw microfibers, for its high hardness, and the Al2O3w layer with lower physical and mechanical strength, ensures damper action and absorbs pulse shock loading. At speed up to 200 m/h the plane of the cutting plate reinforced with Al2O3w microfibers demonstrates high wear resistance, reducing the influence of wear linked with a chemical interaction with the treated material, while the layer reinforced with SiCw microfibers builds a rigid base that is resistant to mechanical destruction of the tools. Operating characteristics of grinding tools designed for processing PCBN cutting plates were studied. The best way to use these tools is to maintain a temperature range of 230–270 °C and a pressure range of 30–50 MPa, for which it is possible to change the diamond outlay by 1.2–1.9 times. Such tools make it possible to reduce the surface roughness of PCBN cutters by 1.36–1.95 times and increase grinding productivity by 2.8–3.5 times.
