The purpose of the study is to establish the conditions for the safe stay of people in multi-apartment residential buildings by equipping them with protective spaces whose enclosing building structures are able to withstand the load from the fall of explosive weapon fragments. The following research methods were used in the study: mathematical modelling of explosion processes and the effect of overpressure on building structures, non-destructive method (elastic rebound method) for determining the strength of concrete using a Schmidt sclerometer, experimental methods for testing the strength of concrete under vertical and horizontal loads. The paper presents statistical data on the deaths and injuries of civilians in residential buildings caused by explosive weapons since the beginning of the full-scale war against Ukraine. The relevance of the chosen area of scientific research is indicated. It is noted that the requirements for the explosive load on building structures and the requirements for the arrangement of protective safety rooms in residential apartment buildings are not sufficiently substantiated in domestic regulatory legal acts. Calculations of the protective properties of the enclosing building structures of protective spaces for such structures as shelter elements constructed on the basis of cast lightweight (hollow) steel modules, prefabricated modular-type civil protection structures, and explosion-proof protective gates of fortifications are carried out. The dependence of the change in the overpressure of the explosion on the distance to the epicentre of the explosion was obtained.
