The purpose of the research is to identify the character of the flow of electromagnetic processes in the equipment of electrical networks, to establish the reasons for the possible occurrence of emergency modes, to develop measures and recommendations for their prevention. Research methods – methods of theoretical electrical engineering, analysis of electromagnetic transient processes in power systems, methods of mathematical modeling of linear and non-linear electric circuits, analysis of literature from open sources. The work developed methods and tools for modeling electromagnetic transients that occur as a result of switching in electrical networks, to prevent the appearance of dangerous overvoltages both during the transient process and after its attenuation in the quasi-stationary mode. In the latter case, overvoltages arise as a result of established or decaying resonance at fundamental, higher or subharmonic frequencies. When modeling transient processes in electrical networks, the characteristics of not only electric but also magnetic circuits are taken into account, especially the presence of ferromagnetic elements. Measures to limit the duration of the existence of overcurrents and overvoltages in abnormal modes are considered.
