The contribution of the peduncle and leaf sheaths to the carbohydrates deposition is significantly smaller. A major part of reserve carbohydrates is deposited in the stem of winter wheat plants after flowering, reaching the maximum accumulation at the start of grain filling. Short-term drought at the beginning of reproductive development reduces the accumulation of water-soluble carbohydrates in the stem and accelerates their remobilization, shifting the maximum level achievement to an earlier period, but does not change the distribution of deposited carbohydrates in the stem segments. It is shown that in winter wheat varieties, the amount of carbohydrates deposited in the stem is determined, in general, by the level of the photosynthetic apparatus capacity, but certain varieties, in particular Podolyanka, Podilska Niva, Kyivska 17, and Horodnytsia, have high stem storage ability regardless of their photosynthetic activity. All studied genotypes of winter wheat showed high efficiency of carbohydrate remobilization. The contribution of deposited carbohydrates to the grain yield of the spike varied depending on the genotype and growing conditions from 10 to 40% and was smaller in varieties with higher photosynthetic apparatus longevity. The amount of deposited water-soluble carbohydrates in the second and third from the top stem internodes was closely correlated with grain yield. The obtained data indicate that the ability to deposit water-soluble carbohydrates in the stem is an important factor that ensures the formation of the yield and can serve as a physiological marker of high productivity. The results of the study reveal the possibilities of breeding and genetic yield of winter wheat in the conditions of modern climatic changes, which is important for ensuring the sustainable agriculture.
