Bakul Institute of superhard material of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine popup.description2  Methods to grow structurally perfect diamonds, using Fe-Co-based solvent alloys and doping them with Mg and Al, have been developed. The specifics of crystallization for Ib and IIa diamond have been determined to ensure the necessary linear and mass growth rates, morphological features of diamond facet surfaces and crystal habit. Methodical approaches to obtain structurally perfect single diamond crystals of 1.5 - 3 mm in a size have been optimized. The designs of БСО -1 geological drilling bits with a diameter of 93 mm, equipped with high-strength heat-resistant Ib and IIa diamond single crystals, have been developed. Tests of drilling bits showed that the application of IIa diamonds, in comparison with type Ib, allows to increase the speed of mechanical drilling by 1.3 times and to increase a penetration depth by a quarter. Tests of IIa single crystals have shown that the most effective area of their use (efficiency reaches 30%) is diamond needles and frames to restore the surfaces of grinding tools.
