Bakul Institute of superhard material of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine popup.description2  Friction stir welding of sheet stainless steels 08Х18Н10Т, 02Х18МБВ, 03Х20Н16АГ6, AISI 304 and austenitic nickel-chromium heat-resistant alloys Inconel -718 and ЭИ698 was performed for the first time using tools made of "Kyborit 2". It was determined that the average grain size in the welding zone of 08X18H10T steel is within 10-20 microns, that is, slightly different from the 5-15 micron grain size in the bulk metal. The average grain size within the weld seam of 02Х18МБВ steel is reduced by 3-5 times relative to the bulk metal. There is a slight grain growth within the weld zone of steel 03Х20Н16АГ6 relative to the bulk metal, and the grain size within the weld seam of AISI 304 steel is 1.5-2 times smaller as compared to the bulk metal grains. The average grain size within the weld seam of two different steels, that are Inconel-718 and ЭИ 698, is 2-3 times smaller than of the bulk steels. Temperature distribution within the friction stir welding zone of plates from the steels mentioned above having 3-4.5 mm thickness was determined experimentally for the first time, using an infrared thermal imager. Successful tests of experimental tools from "Kyborit 2" were carried out for friction stir welding of steels and heat-resistant alloys at the plant "Ivchenko-Progress".
