The effect of pressure, temperature, and exposure time of p-terphenyl polycrystals during pressing on their optical and scintillation properties was studied. It was obtained that the optimal pressing parameters are: pressure 20 MPa, temperature – 180°С, exposure time from 0.5 to 2 hours. Polycrystals with an exposure time of 0.5 hour had maximum transparency, and with an exposure time of 2 hours – maximum light output. It is shown that for p-terphenyl polycrystals obtained by the new approach, the values of light output relative to the standard p-terphenyl single crystal are 125-150% and 135-150% when excited by alpha particles and conversion electrons, respectively. The analysis and interpretation of experimental results was carried out in order to improve the proposed new approach to obtaining organic crystalline scintillators.
