The ability of foliar treatment with both proline and GABA to maintain water balance and content/balance of photosynthetic pigments in leaves, to stimulate growth activity and to increase drought resistance of plants was confirmed. The dependence of the effect of amino acids on the photoperiod and stage of plant ontogenesis was noted. The ability of both GABA and proline to reduce the stomatal aperture and to affect the ultrastructure of parenchyma cells of leaves was demonstrated. A significant decrease in the size of chloroplasts and the number/size of starch grains in them during drying under the influence of GABA was shown. Exogenous proline and GABA contributed to the osmotic correction of tissues due to an increase in the content of endogenous proline. The difference in the dynamics of their action was revealed. The differential response of genes encoding heat shock proteins and heat shock transcription factors to exogenous amino acids was shown. The study of the effects of proline and GABA in mixture revealed a complex interaction of the amino acids (up to the complete leveling of the effects), indicating the interconnection of their metabolic pathways and functioning. The obtained data make it possible to predict new functions of these amino acids as signal molecules. The results of the study are of fundamental importance, and also show the prospects of using foliar application of proline and GABA as an ecologically safe way to increase the resistance of plants to water deficit.
