The calculations will predict the optimal structures of solid nanograins or nanolayers of transition metal compounds and their solid solutions and thin ceramic interfaces. An approach "modeling of the structure and properties of coating materials - deposition of coatings - investigations of their properties" will enable one to clarify the influence of composition, structure and temperature on the properties of coatings and to optimize the technology of their deposition. popup.description2 The object of the research is coating and bulk materials based on the M1-M2-C system, where M1, M2 is a transition metal. The purpose of the research: 1) Based on experimental and theoretical studies, to find the optimal deposition regimes of magnetron coatings based on transition metal compounds and their solid solutions as protective and wear-resistant layers for long-term operation; 2) To establish mechanisms of formation of structural and mechanical properties of deposited coatings based on experimental studies and first-principle calculations. As a result of the implementation of the project, the following results were obtained: 1) The optimal deposition parameters of Ti-Nb-C coatings have been established on the basis of experimental and theoretical studies. It was established that the coatings are TiC-NbC crystallites of solid solutions embedded in an amorphous carbon matrix (nc-Ti1-xNbxC/a-C). The properties of coatings are explained. 2) The optimal deposition regimes of Ti-Zr-C coatings are established on the basis of experimental and theoretical studies. The coatings are nanostructured (nc-Ti1-xZrxC/a-C). The properties of coatings are explained. 3) The properties of coatings (nc-Ti1-x-yNbxMoyC/a-C) based on the Ti-Zr-Mo-C system were deposited and explained with the involvement of first-principle calculations. 4) Optimal deposition parametrs of Mo-W-C coatings were found and their properties were explained. 5) Theoretical studies anabled one to explain a number of structural transformations in the Ti-Mo-C system. 6) Transformation mechanisms and new promising phases in the Ti-W-C system were proposed on the basis of first-principle calculations. 7) First-principle calculations predict new hard phases of NbN and TaN with tetragonal and orthorhombic structures.
