Gryshka National Botanical Garden NAS of Ukraine popup.description2  The pool of secondary metabolites of 6 extracts of C. quitensis plants from the regions of the South Shetland Islands, Graham's Coast and Danco's Coast was studied, and the composition and antioxidant properties of the extracts extracted from plants growing at different locations in the natural environment and in vitro conditions were compared. It was established that all C. quitensis extracts are characterized by a high content of phenolic compounds (up to 38 mg/g of raw material) and exhibit significant antioxidant/antiradical activity (inhibit up to 90% of DPPH radicals in 30 min). It was found that extracts from native pearl millet plants contain mainly flavonoids (glycosides of apigenin, luteolin and methyl esters of luteolin) in the amount of 90% of the total content of phenolic compounds, while the amount of phenolic acids is only 10%. In the extract from the in vitro culture, on the contrary, phenolic acids prevail (58%). Colobanthus quitensis has been shown to be an effective producer of valuable natural antioxidants.
