The Gray Ukrainian, Red steppe breeds of cattle, Ukrainian Steppe White and Speckled breeds of pigs are the objects of research as a potential source of genetic material. Research methods are zootechnical, selection, population genetic, biochemical and biometric methods. The population genetic parameters of the main selection traits of small populations of cattle and pigs were determined. An examination of the gene pool herds of cattle was carried out: the Gray Ukrainian breed of the SE "DG "Askania-Nova" of the Kherson region, the Red steppe breed - SVK "Borozenske" of the Kherson region, PP Moguchy and PSP "Primorsky" of the Zaporizhia region; pigs of the Ukrainian Steppe White and Spotted breeds of SE "DG "Askania-Nova" of the Kherson region. Assessment of animals and formation the information databases of gene pool herds productive qualities cattle and pigs was carried out. Quantitative composition, level and productivity dynamics of cattle and pig genotypes were monitored and the relative variability of breeding traits in agricultural animals’ gene pool herds was studied. Based on the results of research, the methods of cattle and pigs preserving small and disappearing gene pools under the conditions of climatic changes in the south of Ukraine have been improved.
