The object of the study is the Sasyk reservoir with a total area of 21,000 hectares, the top of which, with an area of 3,450 hectares, is part of the Danube Biosphere Reserve. The aim of the scientific research was to evaluate the methods of restoration (renaturalization) of the ecosystems of the Danube Delta on the example of the Sasyk reservoir and to develop recommendations for the optimal use of the ecosystem. The study of flora and fauna was carried out according to generally accepted methods of geobotanical, hydrobiological, ichthyological, herpetological and ornithological research. As part of the research, an assessment of the past and present state of the Sasyk reservoir was carried out, ecosystem changes after desalination of the Sasyk estuary were studied. To restore the ecosystem of the Sasyk reservoir, it is necessary to: return the stable connection of Sasyk to the Black Sea; improvement of the ecological condition of small rivers flowing into the reservoir; establishment of balanced nature management in the reservoir and coastal area; rewilding of transformed areas, strengthening the nature protection regime and preserving ecosystems.
